Are you into trying something very different this winter? Forget about crowded ski slopes of Austria, forget about schlager music until late in the night. Come and try our Montenegro 4×4 Winter experience! This trip combines off-road driving on snow, snowshoe hiking and, if you like, a day of skiing or boarding on the slopes of Bjelasica. From two charming lodges you explore the white wilderness of Montenegro.
Important note: Montenegro is located at the same latitude as Rome and the French south coast. Snow is never a guarantee but there is snow every winter. We have selected 3 accommodations well above 1400m altitude, in areas where snow is most likely. The best period is between late January and early March, when days are a bit longer and snow is most certain. The (lack of) snow defines what is possible and what is not during your trip. We will help you improvising if needed and make sure your experience will be just perfect, regardless of the conditions.
Nadgora resort is located on the edge of Tara canyon, nestled in pristine nature, between ancient spruce forests. This small resort consists of nothing more than a few wooden lodges and a central restaurant with fireplace. This is winter romance as we know it only from the movies. The size of the lodges vary and we will book according to the number of passengers a lodge for 2-8 persons. Each lodge has a bathroom, fireplace and a cozy living room.
Durmitor in wintertime is best explored on snowshoes. We offer a selection of hikes varying from easy going to full day expeditions. If you feel uncertain about going higher up in winter conditions and/or never hikes on snowshoes we can organise a local guide to accompany you. Alternatively we offer a challenging ride over the Sinjajevina plains. Even with your snow chains on this can be quite challenging.
Ideally you drive over mount Stozer to your next stop, the village of Babino Polje in Prokletije mountains. If the snow is too high you have to take the main road via Tara canyon. The last bit to the lodge involves certainly a bit of off-roading. Your highest accommodation is located near the border triangle with Kosovo and Albania and it is here where offer a magical snowshoe hike. Hridsko lake is your target and if you are feeling fit and/or if conditions allow to drive a bit higher up, the border triangle summit of 2366m can be tackled. If you fancy, this is also the perfect venue for tour skiing. Your own equipment is required in this case however, since this is not a wintersport area.
We have saved the fanciest lodge for last. You will instantly feel at home in Jelovica. And Marko and his mother will pamper you with the best homemade food they have on offer. The location, at an altitude of 1300m, is perfect; the ski-resort is easily reached through the tunnel in less then 15 minutes while the area feels still remote and natural. A 2-day ski pass is included during your stay here. You might consider a day of boarding or skiing on the slopes of Kolasin ski area. But you also need it if you want to go hiking. We have designs two hikes here that start with taking the skilift up to the summits. This saves a bit of sweat and allows you to spend all day hiking high up in the mountains.
