Upon your first visit to Montenegro you certainly don’t want to miss the highlights. This trip connects the best of the mountains & the coast in an unforgettable week-long adventure. The 4×4 Lada Niva allows you to bypass the well-trodden paths and approach the highlights over the most scenic roads. Daily suggestions for hiking, canyoning, kayaking & rafting are included, to ensure a daily rush of adrenaline.
This 8-day trip can easily be extended by booking extra nights. We will guarantee to provide you with enough additional 4×4 miles or other actions for those extra days.
Today you land at Podgorica airport where our regular taxi awaits you for a short ride into the city. Take some time for acclimatisation and look ahead to the adventure that awaits you. And enjoy some extra luxury at the start of your trip, because life is simple in the mountains. The hotel where we accommodate our guests is located next to the city park and a stone’s throw from the center, but still very quiet. Enjoy the capital vibes and the wide range of restaurants.
You could reach Montenegro’s best-known mountain range, Durmitor, within 3 hours from Podgorica. But why not spend 2 days getting there? We will guide you via lesser frequented but quite stunning Lipovo valley, the Sinjajevina highlands and the majestic Tara canyon. Before reaching Durmitor you have become best friends with your Lada. The first night is booked on the property of a charming little farm where you will be welcomed warmly. Sample Montenegrin hospitality at first hand!
On the way to this farm you have 2 options. Easy travel via the old road through the canyon of the river Moraca (until mid June a must because of snow higher up) or a more challenging ride via the remote mountains of Zijovo and Komovi. Option 1 allows you to go for a hike in the canyon of Mrtvica river, option 2 requires a bumpy full day adventure in your Lada Niva.
The ride continues to Sinjajevina. These mountains are completely different to what you have seen until now; much rockier and more open than before. It is here where the country’s largest herds grazed for centuries. Welcome to Sinjajevina, the agricultural heart of Montenegro. After an incredible ascend from the valley into the highlands you could make the optional hike to Jablanov vrh summit part of today’s plan. In Tara canyon you should try the zipline before heading on to your camping spot for your 2 nights in Durmitor.
On the property of Nadgora lodges you can park your Lada on the meadow. A bathroom is available especially for campers and all meal care included during your stay. The next day a wide range of outdoor action awaits you. For Durmitor we will provide you with a selection of nice hikes. Or try a legendary e-MTb trip (+ € 45,00) or guided ferrata climb (+ € 60,00). If you consider booking an extra night during your trip, this is your first choice if you like outdoor sports.
Via the northern side of Durmitor national park you continue driving towards the Piva Lake. You will first pass Montenegro’s highest village, equally called Crna Gora (lit.: Montenegro) The descend towards the Tara river is again on scenic gravel roads. Early afternoon you reach the border town of Scepan Polje where an optional afternoon rafting can be booked (+€ 75,00). Then head on to a lovely little campsite on the shores of Piva river. Pitch your Lada on the waterfront and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. And don’t miss the fresh grilled trout at the camps restaurant. If you consider booking an extra night here, we will propose a nice hike to a nearby mountain lake for you.
You will spend the last 2 days of your trip in coastal Montenegro. By lunchtime you should reach the shores of the Adriatic in the bay of Kotor. Forests, rivers and mountains make way for Mediterranean vibes. Instead of sheep & cheese there will be fresh fish on your menu tonight. Before the final descend into the bay we recommend making a little detour to the fortress of sveti Andrija. It requires a dramatic ride and a short hike but the views over the bay are very rewarding.
The night is spent on a small campsite with a beach nearby and our favourite restaurant on the Montenegrin littoral is located within walking distance. A lovely pebble beach with beach bear is located just across the road. You will have plenty of time to explore the ancient towns of Perast and Kotor. Do consider an extra night here if you want more time to fully enjoy all this beauty. For off-road fanatics we have described a nice circular ride over mount Orjen, again with hiking options here and there to stretch the legs.
On the final day you ascend over the old Austrian road into the Lovcen highlands. Enter in a world of ancient villages nestled between barren limestone rocks. It is here where the tribes of Old Montenegro resisted centuries of foreign invasions and established their landlocked microstate back in the 15th century. Hike to the summit of Babina Glava for a dramatic view back down to the bay of Kotor or explore the ancient royal capital of Cetinje en route. If you book an extra night here you will have more time to enjoy Skadar lake. Book the optional private boat ride with return hike with bathing option in the waterfall (€ 60,00).
The last campsite is a charming place at the river bank of one of the majestic streams feeding Lake Skadar. A great way to end this epic journey!
