The picture of driving a Lada Niva through the Montenegrin wilderness appeals to you, but only thinking of sleeping in a tent gives you nightmares? Don’t worry, you are not the only one. Some like it just a bit more fancy; muddy roads & wilderness during the day, a comfortable bed & shower at night. This is the only Montenegro 4×4 Adventure on which you might consider packing a bow tie in your suitcase. The 11-day itinerary covers all the highlights and adds a serious bit of adventure on top. Lada also gets you to places where no other tourists would dare to venture. Add a few hikes or some outdoor action to your trip for the full Montenegro Experience.
Today you land at Podgorica airport where our regular taxi awaits you for a short ride into the city. Take some time to get used to Montenegro vibes and look ahead to the adventure that awaits you. And enjoy the luxury of this lovely hotel. The place where we accommodate our guests is located next to the city park and a stone’s throw from the center, but still very quiet. Enjoy the capital with all its seductions and the wide range of good restaurants within walking distance from the hotel.
After picking up the Lada, you will soon leave the capital, but not before you stock up on enough supplies at the local convenience store. The only stop for food & drinks is at the hotel where you will arrive tonight. Leave the capital and soon the asphalt will deteriorate and eventually disappear completely after an hour or so. Wilderness in Montenegro is really wilderness, and you will experience that as the road gets worse and you drive towards the beautiful mountain lake of Rikavacko. There are few shepherd’s huts around the lake, but that is the only sign of life. No telephone reception, no artificial light, no electricity. The journey continues with a challenging climb and by the end of the day you will reach the Spa Hotel where we’ve booked you. Shower, pool & a lovely buffet style dinner await you here.
The ride continues to Sinjajevina. The climb from Kolasin through Lipovo-valley up is one of the most beautiful sections you will conquer on this trip. The mountains of Sinjajevina are completely different, much rockier and more open than previous one. It is here where the country’s largest herds grazed for centuries; vast open mountain terrain which represents the agricultural heart of Montenegro. The countless shepherd villages are a reminder of this, the numbers of cows & sheep have dropped over the recent years. Life in the city is easier. From the saddle you will have the option to climb one of the higher summits on foot (a 3-4 hour up-and-down). This is a very rewarding bit of exercise.
Via a remote mountain lake called Zabojsko and eventually through the Tara-canyon you will reach Zabljak, the largest settlement in Durmitor national park. Your hotel is conveniently located near the centre but in a quiet street close to the forests.
You will sleep 2 nights in this convenient place which enables you to enjoy all the options Durmitor has to offer. We will include hiking suggestions. Additionally you can book a guided ferrata (+€65 pp) or an epic e-MTB trip (+€ 45 pp).
The famous Durmitor ring road will guide you towards the Piva valley. En route you will enjoy amazing views over the BMV mountain range (Bioc -Maglic – Volusnica). Until the village of Trsa you have the options to choose the northern ring road, which passes through the highest village in Montenegro, or the souther option, maybe even more scenic and with the option to hike another summit en route. From Trsa you descend over gravel roads to the banks of river Tara. Optional rafting (+ € 70,00 pp) can be booked for the afternoon hours here. At the end of the day awaits the most basic accommodation of your trip; Izlazak lodge.
Time to explore new world… We are slowly leaving the highlands behind and descend to the shores of Adriatic. You will enter the Bay of Kotor in the most scenic way, using the old and narrow Austro-Hungarian roads. A short hike up & down to a military fortress from this era provides you with the best possible views over the bay, before finally going down to sea-level. Enjoy the pleasant boutique hotel in the centre of Perast. They serve great dinners that are best sampled on the scenic terrace.
A full day in the bay of Kotor provides you with the choice to spend time in the old towns along the shore or to drive up to the coastal mountain range of Orjen. From this optional 4×4 stage short hikes to scenic summits are among the options. In any case it is highly recommended to end your days with a swim in clear Adriatic waters.
Over the Lovcen highlands (again with optional hikes provided) and with a stop in the ancient royal capital of Cetinje, you travel to your final destination; lake Skadar. The last two nights you will be accommodated in a lovely little lodge on a wine estate.
Lake Skadar has plenty to offer to make the best out of your last day in Montenegro. Consider kayaking, taking a boat ride, a little walk with waterfalls & swimming options, bird watching and of course enjoying the great gastronomy of this region. The lodges are located just half an hour drive from Podgorica airport, where you will return your vehicle 2,5 hours before your flight departs.
